Jordan is a fantastic destination. It features plenty of history and culture, including a noteworthy culinary culture. Yet getting travelers to visit is a challenge due to the country's location next to other popular tourist destinations. Jordanians often joke that their country is the quiet kid on a noisy block.
Working with the Jordanian Ministry of Tourism and the US Agency for International Development (USAID), we performed a full week site inspection of the country's primary visitor areas, including Amman, the Dead Sea, Petra, Wadi Rum and Aqaba. We cataloged the food and beverage experiences everywhere we visited, looking for opportunities how the food and beverage experiences could be improved.
We presented our findings as a critical part of a conference for Jordan's tourism and hospitality stakeholders, which included destination marketers, NGOs and business owners. These stakeholders took their learnings and folded them into their own business and destination planning.
The V&A Hotel is located on Cape Town's popular waterfront harbor. There are a lot of hotels in the area, and competition is high. The hotel needed to know how visitors perceived the food and beverage experience offered by the hotel so that it could increase its competitiveness as needed.
We posed as guests staying at the hotel property. While our activities were what some call "mystery shopping" our focus was 100% on the food and beverage experiences offered by the hotel. Over a two-day say, we assessed dining in the hotel's two restaurants, as well as room service, room mini-bar, welcome amenity, and poolside food/beverage service. We evaluated food and beverage presentation, quality, choice and service.
We delivered a final assessment which outlined our recommendations for improvement. For example, room service breakfast for one included enough food for three people, a huge cost to the hotel.
