The culinary travel trade industry was born in 2001. Since then, the industry has experienced a tremendous growth in both the quantity and quality of products and experiences for food and beverage lovers. Yet what good are successful accomplishments without industry recognition and eventually, consumer promotion?


In 2015, the World Food Travel Association recognized the need for an Awards program for the gastronomy tourism industry. Now in their fifth year, the FoodTrekking Awards benchmark and celebrate excellence and innovation in products and experiences offered to food and beverage lovers who travel.

 

The FoodTrekking Awards ceremony takes place at the end of the FoodTreX London | Food Travel Innovation Summit, the day before the start of World Travel Market (WTM). All winners receive complimentary admission to both the ceremony and the full Summit.

Who Can Enter?

Destination Marketing Organizations or Tourism Boards, Chambers of Commerce, Business Improvement Districts, visitor information centers and NGOs that function as destination marketers.

Judging Criteria:

This category recognizes destinations that are best in class in culinary tourism development and promotion. To us, the best food or beverage destinations use food and drink as key motivators for travelers to choose your destination. Common motivators for culinary travelers can be the quality of the products offered, the authenticity of the experiences, the uniqueness of the experience, and how well the destination has been promoted as a food destinations across social media. Your destination needs to cater to the culinary traveler by offering unique and memorable food and drink experiences.

Best Food or Beverage Tour Experience

Who Can Enter?

Any type of tour operator, including local, regional, national and international tour operators, travel agents and tourist guides.

Judging Criteria:

This category recognizes tour operators that excel in all factors involved in a successful food or beverage tour. Food or beverage tours often allow locals to educate and bring awareness to their clients while having a fun time. The tour may be about a product, a process, traditions, dishes, neighborhood, etc. Also, to provide the best food or beverage tour experience the tour operator must consider everyone involved, including vendors, guests, and even their own team and guides.

Best Food or Beverage Lodging Experience

Who Can Enter?

Any type of lodging business, including hotels, inns, B&Bs, resorts and spas.

Judging Criteria:

This category recognizes businesses that go above and beyond to make food and beverage an unforgettable part of the lodging experience. Why is food or beverage important to highlight in a lodging experience? Lodging and accommodation providers have the unique opportunity to 'highlight' the local food culture. This is important because a visitor's experience with local food and drink will begin or end inside an accommodation business. When we say best food or beverage experience, we don't mean gourmet or innovative necessarily. We are looking for establishments that educate their visitors by bringing awareness to them about the amazing local culinary culture of food and drink. Local ingredients, cooking techniques, traditional dishware, local producers, artisanal producers, are all important factors to consider.

Best Creative Use of Space for a Food Lover Attraction

Who Can Enter?

Any type of business or destination with a unique food lover attraction.

Judging Criteria:

This category recognizes excellence in innovation and creativity in offering a unique and memorable food or beverage experience in an unusual location. Food and beverage experiences are not always delivered in expected locations like a restaurant, nor do they need to be! We know that culinary travelers seek unique and memorable experiences. To cater to this demand, there is a need for creativity and innovation in the industry. You might represent a food hall or market in a historic building, you might offer cooking classes on a boat or other peculiar place, a food tour through unknown areas of town, dining in a cave, or even transforming a historic venue into a food-related experience.

Most Innovative Use of Local Ingredients

Who Can Enter?

Any type of foodservice business, including all chefs, restaurants, cafes, bars, food trucks, caterers, etc.

Judging Criteria:

This category recognizes those chefs or foodservice businesses using creativity and innovation to make local ingredients the star of their menu, while preserving and promoting the local culinary culture. The use of local ingredients is important on many levels, such as preserving local culture, driving local economic development and helping to protect our planet's unique biodiversity. These goals can be achieved in many different ways, although there just one sector of our industry has more potential to do so than any others : foodservice. Chefs and restaurant owners have the power to choose what they put on their menus, and the stories they tell around it.

Best Local Storytelling in a Food or Beverage Experience

Who Can Enter?

Any type of business, organization or destination

Judging Criteria:

This category recognizes entities that can successfully tell the story about their business or product. Storytelling is important in a food or beverage experience because it allows us to connect on an emotional level with the experience. Hearing the stories of the producers, owners, local heroes, and so on, allows us to walk away with a memory, not just a meal.

Food Or Beverage Marketing Campaign

Who Can Enter?

Destination Marketing Organizations or Tourism Boards, Chambers of Commerce, Business Improvement Districts, visitor information centers and NGOs that function as destination marketers.

Judging Criteria:

This category recognizes creativity and innovation in a destination marketing activity or campaign to attract visitors to a region/destination. The campaign can be international or domestic, a single promotional activity or a series of related promotions delivered by one organization. Food lovers often respond well to clever marketing, especially featuring plenty of food "porn". However, with the words "local" and "authentic" are being overused in marketing, and food- and drink- lovers are starting to ignore those, and even take them for granted (i.e. that they are required).
