Today the World Food Travel Association announced the winners of its 2023 Global Culinary Travel Awards. This is the seventh year of the Awards, which recognize excellence and innovation in six categories within the gastronomy tourism industry. This year’s winners are:

Best Agricultural or Rural Experience for Culinary Travelers

Best Beverage Experience for Culinary Travelers

Best Program to Promote Culinary Culture to Visitors

Best Sustainability Solution in a Culinary Tourism Experience
Spoon (Puerto Rico)

Best Use of Technology in a Culinary Tourism Experience
World of Mouth (Finland)

Best Wellness or Health Experience for Culinary Travelers

The Global Culinary Travel Awards (first called the FoodTrekking Awards) were introduced by the WFTA in 2015 to set a benchmark for excellence and innovation in our industry. The Awards open every March 1, and winners are announced every September. This year, six winners were chosen from 99 entries from 18 countries.

Culinary travel was officially recognized as a niche industry in 2001 with the publication of a white paper, “Culinary Tourism: The Hidden Harvest.” Since then, the industry has experienced tremendous growth in both the quantity and quality of products and experiences for culinary travelers.

We wish all our winners future success in the years to come.

In this episode number 72 of the Taste of Place podcast, we speak with Audrey Kelly. Audrey is the co-owner and head pizza maker at Audrey Jane’s Pizza Garage in Boulder, Colorado in the USA, which she runs with her brother, Peter. After studying pizza-making under Tony Gemignani, she opened her restaurant, and achieved quick success, with the restaurant having been been featured on the Food Network; the Travel Channel; and Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Audrey won first place in the Pizza in Teglia competition in Naples, Italy, and has been featured in the New York Times and NPR. As a mother of twin boys, she balances family life with expanding her business, including plans for a second location. Audrey also grew up in a family of bakers, so she knows a thing or two about making dough!
